Meet Ghana’s Most Promising Tech YouTuber – Sorji Grey

Tell us a about yourself?

I am Emmanuel Jason Eliphalet. I make quality tech videos for the internet but primarily publish my videos on YouTube.

When and how did you get started with your YouTube Channel?

I started my channel back in December 2017. It took a lot of energy to start a local YouTube channel about tech predominately because most Ghanaians do not find tech as interesting as other topics like gossip and celeb news. I just knew I had to take action, and one day, I invited friends over to talk about their favorite apps and why they use them, and that’s how I started.

What keeps you going?

My mum keeps me going. As a single parent, she didn’t really have everything, but she put in her all into making me a better person. I learnt to be humble and hardworking from her.

What makes you stand out from other African tech YouTubers?

Africa has few tech youtubers unfortunately, but those few are really killing it and I’ll have to give them props for that. I feel what makes African tech YouTubers stand out from one another is PERSONALITY. I’ll describe my personality as one who tries to make quality and interactive tech videos that can be of true help to people.

Run us through what your day typically looks like.

A typical day of mine is usually a busy one. I wake up at 4:30 and by 6 am I should be out of the house. I run an online tech retail store alongside my busy school schedule. Then, when it’s a Friday I make a tech video for my channel.

Who is your favorite Tech YouTuber and why?

My favorite tech YouTuber is Fisayo Fosudo. He creates really crisp and informative content for YouTube. I believe as Africans, we can equally make high end tech videos comparable to what is done outside Africa and people like Fisayo show that it is possible.

How do you monetize your brand?

I’ve been fortunate enough to work with Huawei Ghana and Samsung Ghana on some campaigns. These campaigns provided great incentives and the legitimacy my brand needed. Aside working with local brands, some international companies do reach out for paid sponsorship deals.

Where / How do you get inspiration for your videos?

I think it’s a combination of learning, observing and watching a variety of content created by amazing people. So specifically, watching other YouTube videos, taking notice of local TV ads, billboards by the roadside, magazines, etc.

What would you say are the top three skills needed to be a successful tech YouTuber?

I think to become a successful tech youtuber you need to let your personality reflect in your videos. Doing you makes you feel confident and that way you can be able to communicate easily with your audience. Secondly, you should be resourceful. Having information people actually need can go a long way in growing your channel. Finally, pay attention to feedback. People might notice flaws or mistakes in your presentation. Paying attention to some of them could shape you to become an even better youtuber.
